What is a fall arrest block?

A fall arrest block is a retractable lifeline containing a retractable webbing or wire rope lifeline which is stored on a reel that is spring-biased this means the lifeline remains under light tension ensuring the shortest length of lifeline is maintained between the fall arrest block housing and the user. The lifeline will freely extract and retract automatically from the reel allowing the user to have free movement but in the event of a fall the life line is rapidly extracted from the reel until it reaches an activation speed activating the reels integrated brake decelerating the user over a short distance, whilst maintaining an arrest force to 6kN or below. Some shorter fall arrest blocks also known as mini blocks dont have an intergrated brake mechanism and locks on the same princable of a car seat belt, these mini fall arrest blocks contain an external energy absorber pack which tears in the event of a fall and maintains the arrest force to the user to 6kN or lower.

A retractable fall arrest blocks should conform to European Standard EN360.

When should fall arrest blocks be used?

A fall arrest block should always be used as specified by the manufacturers instructions and when used correctly provides optimum protection to a user as the device arrests quickly due to the lifeline retaining light tension at all times. This particularly provides better protection where there is limited clearance below the working area. It is important to ensure when using the retractable fall arrest block that the device is anchored above the user and users are able to fall into free space.

Caution should be taken to never exceed the manufacturers recommended safe operating angle from the vertical which varies between the different manufacturers. Fall arrest blocks should never be used in environments or situations which would prevent the user reaching the activation speeds required for the fall arrest block to activate correctly, example sloping surface or unstable materials such as powder or grain ect.

Service Requirements

Service and inspection requirements for a fall arrest block is that it should be inspected and function checked by a trained competent person on a regular basis as deemed by a risk assessment for the environment in which it is used and frequency of use, but at least every 6 months.  Additionally, every 12 months it should be returned to Liftsafe Solutions Ltd or the manufacturer
, for a Full Service, when it will be tested under workshop conditions and re-certificated as laid down by the manufacturer.
